The First Presbyterian National Organ Playing Competition
Celebrating the 50th Anniversary Year

After First Presbyterian Church decided to build its new church in downtown Fort Wayne in the early 1950’s, the music staff, Organist Jack Ruhl and Minister of Music Lloyd Pinkerton, selected the Aeolian-Skinner Organ Company to build its new 88-rank, three-manual instrument.  In 1957-58, the church decided to establish a Music Series to present concerts to Fort Wayne area audiences by internationally noted organists.  The first season of this series included performances by E. Power Biggs, Virgil Fox and Pierre Cochereau.

Jack Ruhl’s previous experience as a participant in organ playing competitions in Chicago prompted him to propose the formation of an annual organ playing competition at First Presbyterian, with the intent of bringing encouragement and recognition to some of the nation’s finest young organists.  His proposal was adopted and the Fort Wayne First Presbyterian Church National Organ Playing Competition was duly launched in 1960.  The first competition attracted seventeen contestants all of whom traveled to Fort Wayne to compete before one judge, Oswald Ragatz of Indiana University, Bloomington.   At the end of a long day, Dr. Ragatz chose John Weissrock as the winner and gave the music staff some advice –the essence of which was:  “Don’t ever do this to a judge again.”  He suggested a preliminary audition of tape-recorded entries, choosing a few finalists and then having a final competition.   That became the format of our Fort Wayne competition.

This year the preliminary judges – Irene Ator, Michael Hollman, and Wayne Peterson—chose four finalists to compete on March 20th.  These four finalists were: Colin Lynch, the Director of Chapel Music and School Organist at St. Paul’s School in Concord, NH having received his Bachelor of Music degree from Northwestern University and a Master of Music degree in Organ Performance at Yale University; Song Yi Park, currently enrolled in the second year of study toward the Graduate Performance Diploma at the Peabody Institute of Johns Hopkins University, having earned her Master of Sacred Music Degree in Organ Performance at Boston University;  Brenda Portman, the Resident Organist at Hyde Park Community United Methodist Church in Cincinnati, with a Master’s Degree in Church Music and Organ Performance from Northwestern University;  and Chelsea Vaught, the Director of Music and Organist at First Congregational Church in Topeka, KS, with a Master of Music degree in Church Music—organ emphasis and carillon performance.

In honor of the fiftieth anniversary of the beginning of these competitions, we are privileged to have as our final judges three former winners:  Huw Lewis (winner in 1974), Mark Brampton Smith (winner in 1989) and James Diaz (winner in 1994).

Welcome

First Presbyterian Church of Fort Wayne welcomes you to its worship and to its work. Founded in 1831, the oldest continuously worshiping congregation in the city, both our theology and the practice of our faith have always been progressive. Our traditions help us live joyfully in the present and toward the future.

We have been blessed by our forebears with a beautiful building, but we know that it is the spirit of the church family within that building that makes us part of Jesus Christ's Church. We are a family of faith, a community seeking God's will. Our ministry and mission are diverse, providing avenues of service for all kinds of people, regardless of race, sex, age, or worldly condition. The whole city is our parish. Our mission is worldwide.

We invite you to help us be a better church and we would like to be for you a family of faith, a home in Fort Wayne. If you are curious about our ministry and mission, or if you are feeling a nudge by God's Spirit to explore the possibility of finding a home with us, please contact Dr. Park at (260) 426-7421, ext. 13, or via email at jspark@firstpres-fw.org.
